Male pattern baldness is generally related to your genes and male sex hormones known as DHT- dihydrotestosterone. This type of hair loss usually starts with a pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown (vertex) area. The hairline progressively moves backwards (recedes) and forms an “m” pattern. Following these symptoms the hair becomes finer, shorter and thinner (terminal hair).

The primary cause of hair loss in women is also a form of pattern baldness, called female pattern hair loss. Although both male and female can be affected with hair loss, male pattern baldness is usually diagnosed based on the appearance and pattern of the hair loss. It is important to note other conditions such as alopecia areata (hair loss occuring in patches). Extreme forms of alopecia areata are alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body. These forms of hair loss typically occur between the ages of 20 and 45 in the majority of patients, but can occur at a very young age and may continue throughout one’s life.

If you are comfortable with your appearance, treatment is not necessary. Hairpieces, wigs, hair weaving or change of hair style may disguise the hair loss. This approach is the least expensive and safest treatment of hair loss for both men and women.


Minoxidil (rogaine) is a topical medication spray that can be applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair fullness. Hair loss returns when you stop using this medicine.

Finasteride (propecia, proscar) is a pill you take that would interfere with the production of DHT hormones that linked to hair loss. This medication slows down the progress of hair loss and baldness. Hair loss returns when you stop taking this medication. Hair Transplant is the only effective and permanent hair loss treatment that works.

Hair Transplant technique has been used since early 1950’s. It consists of highly precise placement of microscopic implants to produce uniform, undetectable, natural looking strands of hair in areas that have been treated. In fact, our current modern “All Follicular Unit Transplant” or AFUT can often repair poor results from previous hair transplant techniques (strip harvest technique, NeoGraft harvest, and computer assisted harvest technique).


A typical hair strand consists of a shaft, which is the hair you see coming out of the skin, and a hair follicle beneath the surface of the skin. Hair grows naturally in small groups which are called follicular units. A follicular unit’s contains 1-4 hair follicles, 1-2 fine vellus hairs, sebaceous glands, a small muscle, nerves and blood vessels.


Each of these follicular units is surrounded by band of collagen and can be seen as one structure when a cross-section is viewed under the microscope. Hair transplant relocates healthy, intact follicular units from a safe donor area at the back and sides of the head to the thinning and balding areas of the head. Hair follicles harvested from these safe donor zones are not genetically predisposed to balding and once they are relocated (transplanted) these follicles will continue to grow through one’s life.


  • Strip Harvest technique – This technique consists of removal of skin bearing hair from the back and sides of the head using scalpel and subsequently dissected into individual follicular unit grafts by a team of highly skilled technicians. A skilled Plastic Surgeon can perform this procedure with only a minimal fine linear scar using a method known as trichophytic closure
  • Trichophytic Closure Technique – Dr. Hong is an experienced Plastic Surgeon who has been performing a wide range of sophisticated cosmetic surgery procedures such as face lift, blepharoplasty and breast augmentation for many years. His skills in performing strip harvest and can therefore give an almost undetectable result. A primary advantage of this procedure is a much higher number of grafts per session.
  • FUE (follicular unit extraction) – FUE is an independent procedure. This technique removes single follicular units one at a time utilizing a small sharp punch with out incision scar. It can be performed manually, using automation, motorized with a continuous suction assisted device (Neograft machine), or using a computer assisted harvesting method (Artas System). The type of device used for this procedure will have significant impact on its results. Complex but precise harvesting process is needed in order to preserve the integrity of hair follicles.

With careful attention to detail in order to yield a high number of grafts with minimal transection, our centre uses the exclusive “DrHongModifiedUltimate FUE- machine.” Our modified ultimate FUE machine will not cause any irreversible damage to the grafts related to trauma and dryness due to negative pressure from the suction. We store our grafts immediately after harvesting in a cool PRP solution to keep them highly viable to avoid tissue deterioration.

Determining which hair transplant method is right for you is a matter of personal choice based on you needs, time, cost and number of procedure you may require. The “All Follicular Unit Transplant” via strip harvesting technique is more rapid and generally less expensive than FUE.

The “DrHongModifiedUltimate FUE” technique is as efficient as strip harvesting method with the added advantage of extremely small scars that are difficult to identify producing only a single linear scar, which can be covered and concealed underneath existing hair. Each of these methods can equally produce desired grown-in results.

We also offer autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance the end result of our transplantation. Platelets are biological constituents of blood. They are a major component of blood clotting system and contain multiple growth factors. The major growth factors are Platelet-derived growth factor (PGF), Transforming growth-factor-beta (TGF-b), Vascular endothelial growth-factor (VEGF), Epidermal growth factor(EGF), Fibroblast growth-factor-2 (FGF-2), Insulin-like growth factor (IGF).

As healing begins almost immediately after the procedure, encrustations may develop at the base of the transplanted follicles. Once hair starts to growth, there will be a progressive cosmetic improvement which will continue for the rest of one’s life.
