HAIR TRANSPLANT

If you are suffering from hair loss, hair transplant will help you.  Beauty and appearance is very important in today’s society.  Hair and hairstyles play a key role of the way we look.  Hair loss has been a big concern to many people. There are several reasons for excessive hair loss, including improper hair care, medical conditions, poor nutrition and lifestyle. The problem can be extremely stressful and needs timely diagnosis. The good news is that successful treatments for hair loss are available.

A typical hair transplant procedure takes between 1,500 to 3,000 grafts normally involves a full day of surgery on an out patient basis. Most patients will arrive in the morning and will have their procedure completed by late afternoon.

PROCEDURE
We will begin by taping the hair on the sides and/or back with hair clips. We will cover an area approximately 1 cm. wide by 6-30 cm (depending on how much hair is required and the size of session booked.) We will only trim the hair in this area. The rest of the hair will not be cut or changed allowing you for a normal hair style that can be easily maintained after your transplant. We make sure that hair above the incision covers your sutures, making the donor area virtually invisible.

After completely freezing the area with local anesthetic we carefully remove all the hair in the donor strip. We will then close the area where the strip was taken from using a single stitch. The actual incision time is less than two minutes, but the preparation time can take up to twenty minutes to ensure you do not feel any discomfort.

In order to remove Follicular Units from the back of the scalp without damaging them, the donor tissue must be removed in one piece. This technique is called "Single Strip Method."

The individual Follicular Units are then separated from the donor strip and dissected under a microscope to create the perfect "Uni-Graft”. These grafts are stored in a special holding solution and refrigerated while awaiting placement in the bald or thinning scalp (the recipient area). We are now ready to plant the new hairs into the donor area. color gradually begins to take on the natural skin color.

ADVANTAGES OF SINGLE STRIP METHOD

  • Maximum follicular unit graft yield is higher with  single strip method with microscopic dissection.. This will allow for more transplanted hairs per session.
  • In most cases, we can complete and finish within your target area in one visit.
  • All hairs transplanted will be permanent for life.
  • Fewer sessions are required. Meaning, lower overall cost than that of the FUE method
  • Using new trichophytic closure, a smaller scar will appear
  • You will receive up to 25% more hair per session than regular transplant methods.

SIDE EFFECTS
Regardless to how successful your surgery is you might experience possible side effects of a hair transplant procedure.  However the side effects of a hair transplant are usually fairly minimal and can be easily treated with a prescribed or over the counter medications such as Extra Strength Tylenol.

Minor and temporary side effects of a hair transplant can include:

  • headaches due to the tugging and manipulation of the scalp area during the procedure
  • a small amount of bleeding which is normal, numbness or scalp tenderness and temporary thinning of pre-existing hair.

Both thinning of pre-existing hair and scalp numbness occur in a good majority of hair transplant procedures, but are temporary condition.

Another less common side effect is swelling which usually occurs around the forehead and the eye area.  Although the patient will experience a little discomfort and headiness, the swelling normally lasts two to five days, and the doctor can write you a prescription for something that will help reduce the swelling.   Many patients might also experience an itchy scalp after the surgery, which is not unusual or cause for alarm.  Regular shampooing and using saline to moisten the grafts usually helps to minimize this condition.

RISKS
Complications are usually minor when a hair transplant is performed by a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in performing hair transplants. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your doctor's instructions both before and after the procedure. You should be aware that:

  • Scarring may occur on the graft sites. However, most scars are small and are covered up by growing hair.
  • Infection can occur in the grafted areas. You may need antibiotics before the procedure, as a precaution, or afterward if infection occurs.

You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following your doctor's instructions both before and after the procedure.

RECOVERY
While it does take time to recover from a hair transplant, the good news is that the recovery time is limited. Patients can go home the same day, with limited discomfort. The recovery time will depend on the severity of the hair loss and the number of grafts. The surgeon may give the patient Prednisone to reduce the swelling and antibiotics to prevent infection. Life should return to normal the day after your transplant. However there are a few tips that you should consider doing to make the recovery as quick and easy as possible. These tips are as follows:

  • Don't overdo it. Rest is the best thing to do after surgery. Make sure you elevate the head when lying down. Also don't do any bending which will cause unnecessary blood flow to your head.
  • Avoid aspirin for a week afterwards because aspirin things the blood. Your doctor should prescribe painkillers that are safe.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise for a week or so.

Within a week after surgery stitches will be removed. You'll then be able to go out in public and proudly show off your new hair!
